Nouns Donated $100K to Support Gitcoin’s Crypto Advocacy Efforts

Nouns helped fund Gitcoin’s push to keep crypto open, accessible, and community-first.

Details

In August 2023, Nouns passed Proposal 278 to support Gitcoin’s web3 policy and advocacy efforts with a donation of 55 ETH (about $103k at the time of proposing). The funding was used to advance Gitcoin’s mission to educate policymakers, activate the crypto community, and build lasting infrastructure for open-source, decentralized innovation.

With this support, Gitcoin launched Crypto Advocacy — a campaign focused on making sure web3 builders and users have a voice in Washington. This included op-eds, direct engagement with lawmakers, community outreach, and the development of digital tools designed to coordinate crypto-native advocacy across the U.S.

Nouns also minted 5,000 “Stand With Crypto” NFTs for 3.885 ETH in an effort to claim the top spot on the campaign’s mint leaderboard — a playful, visible show of support for the cause.

While Nouns didn’t finish in first, they still landed in the top three holders overall, making their presence, and support, known.

Why It Matters

Without proactive education and representation, crypto policy risks being written by those who don’t understand the technology — or worse, fear it. Gitcoin’s initiative aimed to close the gap between innovation and legislation, ensuring that web3 values like transparency, decentralization, and public goods have a voice in the political process.

For Nouns, this proposal was an opportunity to extend its mission beyond creative and cultural proliferation and into policy — helping protect the very systems that allow Nouns (and countless others) to experiment, coordinate, and build in the open.
